Partnership with Clayoquot Cleanup Offers Guests Hands-On Coastal Rehabilitation Experience

Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada – July 17, 2018 – Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is pleased to announce the launch of its new Coastal Ambassador Program, in partnership with Clayoquot Cleanup.

The program offers resort guests the opportunity to get involved with wildlife habitat rehabilitation in Clayoquot Sound in a more fundamental way.  Ocean plastics and other marine debris are washing ashore with every tide and have damaged wildlife habitat throughout the region.

Guests will travel to remote islands within Clayoquot Sound to participate in hands-on rehabilitation efforts with the aim of preserving important areas for breeding, nesting, and foraging for the variety of species that call Clayoquot Sound home. A portion of the cost of the experience is donated directly to Clayoquot Cleanup.

Clayoquot Marketing and Guest Relations Manager Rosalyn Young says not only are travelers looking for unique off-the-grid locations to disconnect, but they are seeking to immerse themselves in the local culture and environment in a more authentic and meaningful way.  “For us, combining adventure and stewardship is a natural fit. We love sharing the beauty and magic of Clayoquot Sound with our guests, but the reality is that this fragile ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabit it won’t be here in the future to enjoy unless we address these issues. It is our responsibility as stewards of this land to educate our guests and get them involved. The experience is profoundly impactful.”

An interactive multimedia display housed in one of the resort’s signature canvas tents is available for guests to explore and learn more about the program and the wildlife under threat. Clients can also “adopt a shoreline” to support the movement into the future.

Clayoquot Cleanup founder Josh Temple says this is an important milestone. “We are entering a new era of environmental stewardship in Clayoquot Sound.  For the first time in our region’s history, visiting guests and local environmental organizations are teaming up to save countless species of wildlife from the harmful effects of ocean plastics and marine debris.  With the help of Clayoquot Wilderness Resort we are forging new paths in the realm of habitat restoration and the results are inspirational.”
